In 1969, the Woodstock music festival took the world by storm. The festival cemented many bands and musicians in the annals of rock and roll history, but it also brought together half a million diverse people through their love of music. The Woodstock message was peace and love in a period of intense political and cultural change. But the power of music was being recognized all across the US, including Placitas. There was the BB King Medicine Ball concert in an open field, the famous musicians who passed through the Thunderbird Bar, and many an impromptu outdoor concert.

In this 50th anniversary year, KUPR is celebrating the power of music to entertain, educate, inspire, preserve history, build community and bring about social change. Join us at Anasazi Fields in Placitas (26 Camino de los Pueblitos) as we remember Woodstock, what it inspired and raise some money for the KUPR building fund too. Grab some wine and craft brews, food truck delicacies, a tie dying event and a fantastic lineup of entertainment. Tickets are $25 and go on sale July 1 at The Merc in Placitas and at Brown Paper Tickets. We expect to sell out ... get yours early. Carpooling recommended! Check out the details for the day below:

Doors open at 1 pm and the entertainment begins at 2 pm:
  • Singer/songwriter John Bullock and John Davis kick the entertainment off at 2 pm.
  • Next things kick into overdrive with a rare appearance by the legendary "Cadillac Bob and The Rhinestones". They were known as one of the biggest and best bands in New Mexico, performing with legendary blues players including Ray Charles and Bo Diddley. They command the room with their high energy instrumentals and the wonderfully strong and stylish vocals of the Rhinestones.
  • Placitas poet Larry Goodell will grace the break between bands with a bit of history about the famous poets who lived and passed through Placitas and the infamous Thunderbird Bar.
  • The DeRangers wrap up the afternoon. DeRangers are The Range Cafe's house band. Tom Fenton is lead guitarist for DeRangers—and his history goes back to the Last Mile Ramblers, another Thunderbird regular. This band slides easily from genre to genre depending on who is sitting in with them. Prepare to be delighted.
  • Need a history lesson? Enjoy photographs, posters, videos, recordings and memorabilia of the vintage bands that performed around the area at this Facebook site.
